With the release of Leopard (the new Mac OS, for those non techy types) came a bunch of new features. One that I'm growing to like is the ability to read RSS feeds inside Mail.app. The only problem with using it this way is that it's not as easy to navigate as something like NetNewsWire. You have to manually click on specific feeds to read the particular articles instead of having a nice view of all unread articles. Well here is how to get back that control over your feeds.
If there is anything in the world that drives me crazier than tiny dogs in purses, it's the icon for Mail bouncing away ad infinitum. This problem started when I created a Mail rule that marked all Junk mail as read and moved some specific items straight away to the trash. So what was the solution to this nagging problem? After some searching and fiddling I came up with this:
- Step 1: Download Dock Detox from Unsanity.org by using this link
Dock Detox Universal Binary
Note: The regular Dock Detox is not Universal and does not work on Intel Macs. The link above is a beta of the Universal Binary and as such had an expiration date of May of 2006, but there's a simple work around for that. Which brings us to step two. - Step 2: Download the most current version of Application Enhancer from Unsanity.org (as of this post it's 2.0.3)
After you've installed Dock Detox, logout of OS X and log back in. You should get a warning that the Application Enhancer (the beta version installed by Dock Detox) is expired. Tell it ok and install the newest version. This will clear up the expiration notice and still allow Dock Detox to preform it's magic. - Step 3: Open System Preference and click Application Enhancer, then click Dock Detox 1.3b1. Click the plus in the Applications pane and add Mail to the list.
Viola! The "Jack Russel F*#@ing Terrier" bounce is gone, leaving you with a nice annoying free Mail.app
Enjoy!
